Star Bright, Star Light

“…I am the Root and the Off Spring of David, and the bright Morning Star.”

Revelation 22:16 (NIV)

As we celebrate and commemorate the birth of our Saviour King, we need to clearly distinguish between Jesus – the Bright Morning Star – and Lucifer – the devil, also known as the “…morning star, son of the dawn”(Isaiah 14:12).

In His human nature, Jesus is the root – He is lowly, humble, and unremarkable, but in His divine nature, He is the Bright Morning Star. He is majestic and lifted on high. Comparably, Lucifer was simply mentioned in Isaiah 14:12 as the “morning star” that fell from heaven. In Guyanese parlance, we would say that his star ‘pitched.’

The use of the expression Bright Morning Star for Jesus and morning star for the devil have theological significance. Our enemy is the fallen star that remains fallen, and Jesus is the Bright Morning Star that never goes out. The title ‘Bright Morning Star’ conveys hope and assurance. It is the forerunner of the day. As night falls away and a new day dawns, the bright morning star is the most prominent and beautiful of the celestial bodies. And as the darkness of this evil world gives way to the brightness of God’s glorious Kingdom, Jesus Himself will capture our attention as the One who ushers in a brand new day.

Beloved, Starlight, Star Bright reminds us that Jesus Christ took us out of darkness into His marvelous light – 1st Peter 2:9.

It is indeed fitting that our Heavenly Father used the Brightest Star in the celestial galaxy to guide the Magi to the birthplace of our Saviour King, Jesus Christ. No light in either heaven or the earth can shine into the dark world of our sinful state and produce transformational changes in our lives other than Jesus, the light of this world (John 8:12). He is love. He is light.

Allow the light of His love to tear down every altar of unforgiveness, bitterness, hatred, and resentment that has brought a spirit of heaviness upon your soul and bound you. Jesus was born to set the captive free (Luke 4:18). Surrender your heart to Him today and receive His free gift of Salvation.
